Prantl’s torte a sweet start for dark stout from brewery

- By Bob Batz Jr.

The next Platform Beer/ Prantl’s Bakery beer takes a dark twist, a sweet stout inspired by the Western Pennsylvania bakery’s Chocolate Almond Torte.

Brewed with Prantl’s famous almonds, chocolate, vanilla, and lactose or milk sugar, the 8.5%-alcohol-by-volume brew is to be released Saturday at the Clevelandbased brewery’s locations in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio. The 16-ounce cans are to be available starting Monday at retail locations in Pittsburgh, where Platform plans to open a brewery and taproom.

This is Platform’s second collaboration with Prantl’s. The first was Torte, a lighter and still lighthearted blonde ale meant to taste like the bakery’s famous-for-48years Burnt Almond Torte. It was released to much hoopla in April.

“We saw so much excitement around the first batch and knew we had to do it again,” said Matt Subel, Platform’s vice president of sales.

The brewery since has been purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Brewers Collective, which owns a dozen other craft breweries. But Platform cofounder Paul Benner said the brewery still will open a 10-barrel brewery and restaurant at 4805 Penn Ave. in Garfield.

The news about the new Pittsburgh-inspired beer did not include any updates about the Pittsburgh brewery location. But Mr. Benner will speak about that Nov. 19 at the Cultural Trust’s sold-out Craft Beer School.

Pastry and other sweet beers just keep coming. Also this month, Yuengling launched its Hershey’s Chocolate Porter, Spoonwood Brewing launched its collaboration with Bethel Bakery inspired by the bakery’s pumpkin drop cookies and 412 Brewery made a beer inspired by Jenny Lee Swirl Bread.
