Mars surges past Woodland Hills, 27-12

Woodland Hills had a chance to play the spoiler Friday night.

The Wolverines, however, came up short at knocking off Class 5A Allegheny Eight Conference foe Moon, 27-12, at the Wolvarena in Turtle Creek.

With the victory, the No. 3-ranked Tigers (7-2, 5-1) now have an opportunit­y to win their first conference title since 2003 next week against West Allegheny. Woodland Hills (2-7, 0-6), which opened its schedule with six consecutiv­e losses, entered the game riding a two-game winning streak and were tied with Moon at the half, 6-6.

Moon quarterbac­k Tyler McGowan threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns. A sophomore, McGowan completed 15 of 29 passes. He connected with Dylan Sleva for two touchdowns.

Woodland Hills quarterbac­k Deontae Williams completed 9 of 20 passes for 132 yards. He put the Wolverines on the scoreboard in the second quarter when he hit William Clark on a 15-yard touchdown pass.

More Class 5A

North Hills 19, Shaler 12: The Indians (6-3, 5-1) built a 13-6 halftime advantage and held on to secure a Northern Conference win at home against the Titans (3-6, 2-4). Dylan Pawling scored two rushing touchdowns for North Hills. He scored on runs of 2 and 9 yards and finished with 62 rushing yards on 12 carries. He also completed 5 of 5 passes for 57 yards. Shaler’s Darin Mizgorski completed 12 of 27 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. North Hills has a chance at winning its first conference title since 2010 next week against Penn Hills.

Kiski Area 10, Mars 7: After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers (4-5, 3-3) were able to hold on to secure a Northern Conference victory on the road against the Planets (5-4, 3-3). Cody Dykes booted a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter before Mars answered with a 60-yard touchdown reception by Nick Spotti in the fourth quarter. Kenny Blake followed up with a 4-yard touchdown run to seal the win for Kiski Area. Blake finished with 204 rushing yards on 48 carries.

Fox Chapel 41, Armstrong 14: Shane Susnak threw for 189 yards and a touchdown to guide the Foxes (4-5, 3-3) to a Northern Conference win at home against the Riverhawks (1-7, 0-6). Susnak completed 13 of 19 passes and connected with Zidane Thomas on a 59-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Thomas also scored on a 1-yard run.

Upper St. Clair 51, Chartiers Valley 18:

The visiting Panthers (6-3, 4-2) collected 510 yards of total offense and toppled the Colts (2-7, 0-6) to secure an Allegheny Eight Conference victory. Jaden Keating rushed for a game-high 154 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries for the Panthers. Ethan Dahlem followed up with 106 rushing yards and a score. Dahlem also completed 7 of 8 passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns. David Pantelis, the leading receiver in the WPIAL, had three receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Gateway 48, Connellsvi­lle 7: Derrick Davis scored five touchdowns as the No. 2 Gators (7-2, 4-1) dominated the host Falcons (1-8, 0-6) in Big East Conference action. Davis finished with 131 rushing yards on 12 carries. He scored on runs of 3, 19, 3, 1 and 20 yards. Bryson Venanzio completed 6 of 7 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown. Ahmad Hooper provided Connellsvi­lle with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Penn-Trafford 56, Hampton 7: The No. 1 Warriors (8-1) built a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and went on to blast the host Talbots (2-6) in non-conference play. Gabe Dunlap completed just 4 of 7 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Carr scored two touchdowns, catching a 35-yard pass from Dunlap before scoring on a 24yard run. Hampton’s lone score came on a 4-yard run by Luke Lindgren.

Penn Hills 20 Baldwin 7: Germar Howard rushed for 241 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries to lead the No. 4 Indians (8-1) to a non-conference victory at home against the Highlander­s (5-4). Eddie McKissick gathered 107 yards of total offense. He rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries as well as threw for 61 yards and a score. McKissick completed 7 of 10 passes.

Latrobe 35, Midd-West 7: Kameron Stevens scored two touchdowns as the visiting Wildcats (4-5) earned a non-conference win against the Mustangs (3-6).
