A 24-year-old man who was shot in July during what police believe was a robbery attempt died Monday.

Julian Carpenter, of Pittsburgh, was shot three times in the 2100 block of Rhine Street on July 2 and had been hospitalized since the shooting in critical condition. He died at 10:27 p.m. Monday, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office.

Police believe Mr. Carpenter was lured to the Spring Hill home by 17-year-old Shayla Johnson and 20-yearold Onaje Dickinson, who then attempted to rob him. In August, Shayla was charged as an adult with robbery and conspiracy in connection with the shooting.

Dickinson was killed on July 14 by a Penn Hills police officer after police believe he was involved in another fatal robbery.

Police allege Dickinson robbed several people before he was killed. They have linked a gun he was carrying to the killing of Mr. Carpenter, to a homicide in Baldwin Borough, and to the slaying of Antonio MakhandaLopez, 30, who was shot at Frankstown Road and Graham Boulevard on July 14.

Dickinson ran from that scene and was cornered in a basement nearby; he emerged from hiding and fired three shots at police, who returned fire and killed him, according to body camera footage.

In Mr. Carpenter’s case, police said text messages between Shayla and Dickinson show that they worked together to set up a robbery of Mr. Carpenter. Police believe Shayla had a sexual relationship with Mr. Carpenter, according to a criminal complaint, and that she leveraged that to get him to come alone to meet with her.

Shayla also confessed to at least two people that she was involved in the robbery setup, according to the complaint, and told one witness that Mr. Carpenter “shouldn’t have been acting like he had money.”

Police did not immediately say Tuesday whether Shayla will be charged with homicide in connection with Mr. Carpenter’s death.
