RMU women falter in 4th

Colonials nearly upend TCU on road

-

The Robert Morris women fell short of their first victory against a Power Five opponent in nine years, as TCU scored six of final eight points of the game to pull out a 6661 victory in the 2019-20 season opener for both teams in Fort Worth, Texas.

Robert Morris defeated Virginia Tech, 66-52, in 2010, and also owns wins against West Virginia (88-80) in 1994 and Purdue (67-55) in 1982.

The Colonials fell behind early against the Horned Frogs, trailing by as many as 11 points, but outscored TCU, 39-25, in the second and third quarters to grab a 50-47 advantage before fading.

“It’s tough to come out on the losing end after such a hard-fought effort,” said fourth-year head coach Charlie Buscaglia. “We started rocky defensively but made some good adjustments, and earned some hard-earned stops — we just weren’t able to close it out the way we needed to.”

Nina Augustin led the Colonials with 11 points, and Holly Forbes added 10. Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu nearly opened the season with her fourth career double-double, posting nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Other women’s games

Penn State 73, Towson 67: Coach Carolyn Kieger won her debut with the Nittany Lions, and picked up the 100th victory of her career, with the help of a 55-point second-half outburst against the Tigers in Towson, Md. Senior Siyeh Frazier and freshman Makenna Marisa led four Lions in double figures with 15 points apiece.

Kent State 77, Duquesne 75: Megan Carter hit a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Golden Flashes past the Dukes at PPG Paints Arena. Libby Bazelak made two free throws with four seconds left to tie the score, but that left just enough time for Kent State to inbound the ball after a timeout and get to Carter for the winning shot.

Penn State 84, Maryland Eastern Shore 46: Curtis Jones Jr., who was granted a waiver earlier in the day to be immediately eligible, scored 10 points and was one of six Nittany Lions in double figures in a season-opening victory against the visiting Hawks.

Jones graduted with a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State in August, but required a waiver as a two-time transfer. He started his career at Indiana as a freshman, then transferred to Oklahoma State.
