Islanders’ rookie sets up 10th win in row

Bardreau scores on penalty shot

-

Welcome to the NHL, Cole Bardreau. Who? Cole Bardreau, that’s who, and he scored his first NHL goal on a penalty shot in the second period, and the host New York Islanders beat the Ottawa Senators, 4-1, Tuesday night for their 10th consecutive win.

Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas each had a goal and an assist, and Josh Bailey also scored to help the Islanders win their first game in Brooklyn this season and extend their winning streak to the second longest in franchise history, trailing only a 15game run Jan. 21 to Feb. 20, 1982. Thomas Greiss stopped 27 shots.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau had a goal for the Senators and Craig Anderson finished with 28 saves. Ottawa had won three of its past five games after starting the season 1-6-1.

Late in the second period, Bardreau had a breakaway but was pulled down by Mark Borowiecki to earn a penalty shot.

The rookie skated in on Anderson and beat him through the five-hole for his first NHL goal in his seventh game.

It was the second time the Islanders scored on a penalty shot against the Senators this season.

Nick Leddy did it in a 4-2 win Oct. 25 at Ottawa.

The Islanders will get a chance to run the win streak to 11 Thursday night when they play host to the Penguins in Brooklyn.

In a strange bit of scheduling, it will be the first of the three meetings with the Penguins in a six-game stretch.

Maple Leafs

Captain John Tavares was back in the lineup for Toronto Tuesday night after missing seven games with a broken finger, but he left the goal-scoring to a trio of young teammates as the host Maple Leafs beat Los Angeles, 3-1. Auston Matthews and William Nylander scored 30 seconds apart in the third period and Alexander Kerfoot also scored. The Maple Leafs were 3-2-2 in Tavares’ absence.

Flyers

Forward Joel Farabee and goalie Carter Hart showed why the Philadelphia’s future could be bright. Farabee, a 19-year-old rookie, scored one of four goals for Philadelphia and the 21-year-old Hart stopped 33 shots in the host Flyers’ 41 victory against Carolina.
