Ohio State DE Young out for violation

- From local and wire dispatches

Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end Chase Young, a Heisman Trophy contender who has been the most dominant defensive player in Football Bowl Subdivision this season, is being held out because of a potential undisclosed violation of NCAA rules, the university announced Friday.

Young, a junior from Hyattsville, Md., will not play for the third-ranked Buckeyes Saturday in a game against Maryland “due to a possible NCAA issue from 2018 that the Department of Athletics is looking into,” the school said in a release.

Young tweeted Friday that he had accepted a loan from a family friend and is in the process of working with Ohio State and the NCAA to be able to play again.

It is unclear if Young will miss additional games beyond the Maryland contest. Sources familiar with NCAA compliance told ESPN that similar violations can result in multigame suspensions, but that a number of variables — including who the loan came from, how much it was for, proof of repayment and when the school knew of the violation — could play a factor.

Young leads FBS with 13.5 sacks and is tied for second with 15.5 tackles for a loss.

More Ohio State

Georgia and Ohio State have played each other in football only once, but they will face off at least twice more after scheduling a home-and-home series for 2030 and 2031. The Bulldogs will play host to the Buckeyes Sept. 14, 2030, and Georgia will travel to Ohio State for the season opener Aug. 30, 2031. Ohio State hasn’t played a regular-season game against an SEC opponent since it faced LSU in 1987 and 1988.

Penn State

Four-star offensive tackle Jimmy Christ officially decommited from Virginia, then promptly committed to Penn State just hours later. This Virginia native made both announcements via Twitter. A top 250 recruit nationally according to Rivals, Christ (6 feet 7, 298 pounds) ranks as the No. 3 prospect from the state of Virginia, as well as the No. 22 offensive tackle prospect in the nation.
