Michigan State’s Winston out

-

All-American guard Cassius Winston missed No. 14 Michigan State’s 95-62 win Sunday night against Western Michigan because of a bone bruise in his left knee.

Winston was injured in practice Friday. He watched warmups Sunday in street clothes.

Winston is averaging 17.6 points and 6.1 assists per game for the Spartans (10-3), who closed the non-conference portion of the season against the Broncos (7-6) of the Mid-American Conference.

Winston was the preseason Big Ten player of the year and a first-team AllAmerican last season, leading the Spartans to the Final Four. The point guard averaged 18.8 points and 7.5 assists per game.

Maryland

Chol Marial hardly played during his final two years of high school and missed Maryland’s first 12 games in his freshman season after surgery on both legs. The 7-foot-2 center from South Sudan has finally arrived. Marial was welcomed with an ovation in his college debut and dunked less than a minute after entering as the 13th-ranked Terrapins beat Bryant, 84-70. Marial had six points and five rebounds in 14 minutes in his delayed debut for the Terrapins (11-2), while Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 19 points as Maryland ended a twogame slide in the non-conference finale for both teams.

Michigan

With Isaiah Livers out because of an injury, coach Juwan Howard went big. That was a problem for undermanned UMass Lowell. Jon Teske had 25 points and eight rebounds, and the 7foot-1 senior center and his towering teammates created headaches as No. 11 Michigan overpowered the River Hawks 86-60 to close the nonconference schedule. Teske opened each half by scoring the first four points for Michigan. The Wolverines (10-3) played their first game without their leading scorer, Livers, who is out indefinitely after the junior forward injured his groin last week. Sophomore Brandon Johns Jr., who is 6-8, got his first start, and 6-11 Colin Castleton and 6-10 Austin Davis added length. UMass Lowell does not have a player over 6-7.
