Ooh, shiny!
Golden Globes are about fun (and maybe awards)
With Ricky Gervais back to host for the fifth — and, he says, final — time, expect the unexpected from the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night.
The live broadcast from the Beverly Hilton is always a more casual affair than, say, the Oscars, with attendees eating and drinking and, if form holds, Gervais drinking onstage as well. The British comic recently dived into hot water with a series of tweets he claimed were “joke” responses to a spoof Twitter account. The subject? Trans women.
There are a few Pittsburgh ties to this year’s event, where nominees in film and television are selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Billy Porter is up again for best actor in a drama (“Pose”), and Tom Hanks, an honorary Yinzer for portraying Fred Rogers, is nominated for supporting actor in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” Hanks also is the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Cate Blanchett is nominated as best actress for another film shot in
Western Pennsylvania, “Where’d You Go Bernadette.”
Porter, whose red carpet looks alone are worth the price of admission, is certain to be in the spotlight whether he wins or loses.
As usual, the HFPA has made some eclectic choices in its nominations. Despite praise for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “Little Women,” neither of the films’ directors, Marielle Heller and Greta Gerwig, was recognized.
“Parasite,” a drama about a poor family trying to find work in modern-day Seoul, was nominated for foreign film along with its director (Bong Joon Ho) but not best drama. Similarly, “The Lighthouse” and stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe were snubbed.
The broadcast of the 77th Golden Globes on NBC begins at 8 p.m. Sunday. It’s also available through various streaming platforms, including NBC’s live app and possibly the HFPA Facebook page.
