Twins sign Bailey, Hill to one-year deals
The Minnesota Twins signed starting pitchers Homer Bailey and Rich Hill to one-year contracts Tuesday.
Bailey, 33, is a 13-year major league veteran who split last season between Kansas City and Oakland, going 13-9 with a 4.57 ERA in 31 starts. In 243 major league starts, the righthander is 80-86 with a 4.57 ERA.
His contract will be worth $7 million with incentives if he reaches 180 innings, a major league source said.
Bailey’s best season came in 2013 when he was 11-12 with a 3.49 ERA for the Cincinnati Reds and had 199 strikeouts in 209 innings.
Hill, a left-hander, will be 40 on opening day, but will be out until at least June after having surgery in October to repair a detached UCL in his left elbow. He has pitched for eight teams in 15 seasons. He was 4-1 last season with a 2.45 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 482 ⁄ innings before being injured.
His contract is for $3 million, with incentives worth close to $10 million, a source said.
International hockey
Canada routed Czech Republic, 7-2, in Ostrava, Czech Republic, to complete the preliminary round at the world junior hockey championship and clinch the top spot in Group B. Canada will face Slovakia, which finished fourth in Group A, in the quarterfinals Thursday. The United States placed second in Group B and faces Finland, the third team in Group A. In other quarterfinals, Russia will face Switzerland and Sweden will play the Czechs.
• Team Canada won the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, for the fourth time in the past five years and secured a record 16th title overall. Team Canada beat Trinec Ocelari of the Czech Republic, 4-0, in the annual Christmas tournament and broke a tie with host HC Davos for most titles in tournament history.
Soccer
Los Angeles FC re-signed veteran MLS defenders Jordan Harvey, 35, and Dejan Jakovic, 34, who combined to start 42 games on the back line last season. … The LA Galaxy signed former Chicago Fire midfielder Aleksandar Katai, 28, who scored 18 goals in 62 appearances the past two seasons.
Golf
The PGA Tour announced a 10-year deal with Sentry Insurance to be the title sponsor of the Tournament of Champions, making Kapalua, Hawaii, the home of PGA Tour winners through at least the end of the next decade.
