Schauffele takes lead at Kapalua

Xander Schauffele hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation in his second round at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii, and finished the round bogey free.

Through bursts of rain and gusts that topped 30 mph, Schauffele managed to go bogey-free for the second day in a row with a 5-under 68 that gave him a one-shot lead on Patrick Reed and Joaquin Niemann.

Niemann didn’t make a birdie until the ninth hole and limited the damage for a 72. Rickie Fowler is in fifth at 7 under.

Tennis

Canada swept the first match of the new ATP Cup with Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime winning singles encounters against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Michail Pervolarak­is of Greece and then combining to win the doubles. The 24team tournament kicked off the men’s tennis season for 2020, with matches in Brisbane and Sydney on Australia’s east coast and Perth in Western Australia state. The Canadians took an unassailab­le 2-0 lead ahead of the doubles when Shapolvalo­v held off No. 6-ranked Tsitsipas, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4,) in Brisbane. The United States was leading 1-0 against Norway before Casper Ruud led the Norwegians to a 2-1 victory in Perth.

Soccer

Stanford junior midfielder Catarina Macario and Clemson junior forward Robbie Robinson are the Hermann Trophy winners as the top college players. Macario is the fifth female player to repeat as the winner and the sixth two-time women’s winner overall. She led Division I and set a Stanford record with 32 goals last season. Robinson led the nation in points with 45 and tied for the lead in goals with 18.

Baseball

Relief pitcher Will Harris is joining the Washington Nationals after they beat him and the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the World Series. Harris and the Nationals agreed to a $24 million, three-year contract.
