History Center hosts genealogy workshops
The Heinz History Center is hosting three daylong genealogy workshops.
On Tuesday, Fintan Mullan and Gillian Hunt, Irish genealogy experts from the Ulster Historical Foundation in Belfast, Ireland, conduct a workshop on a multitude of historic records and electronic sources to further genealogical research in Ireland.
On May 16, an African American genealogy workshop features two speakers. Angela Walton-Raji is a genealogist and researcher who specializes in African American and Native American ancestry. Professor Alaina E Roberts, from the University of Pittsburgh history department, researches land where Native Americans and freed African Americans were able to obtain property, build communities and enjoy certain rights.
The May 16 workshop is a collaboration by the history center’s African American Program, the AfricanAmerican Historical & Genealogical Society in Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Africana Studies.
On May 31, the history center hosts its first Scottish genealogy workshop with Paul Milner, an author and expert on genealogy research in the British Isles. The workshop is presented in partnership with the St. Andrew’s Society of Pittsburgh.
