Bethel Park advances

Westphal leads all scorers with 23 as Black Hawks fend off Upper Dublin

Bethel Park had a tall task in keeping Upper Dublin’s 6foot-3 Lehigh recruit Jackie Vargas in check in their PIAA Class 6A second-round matchup. The Black Hawks accomplish­ed the feat and are moving on after a 47-40 triumph.

Olivia Westphal of Bethel Park (23-3) led all scorers with 23 points. Sophia Nath chipped in 10 more.

Vargas, an all-state player who has scored more than 1,000 career points, led Upper Dublin with 13 points.

Other Class 6A

North Allegheny 51, State College 38: North Allegheny (24-3) scored the first 14 points of the game

and cruised into the next round. The Tigers held their largest lead of 18 points in the third quarter. The Little Lions put together a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers answered back and netted the final six points of the game. Lizzy Groetsch paced North Allegheny with 15 points, including an 8-for-8 performanc­e from the freethrow stripe.

Plymouth Whitemarsh 53, Baldwin 27: After upsetting the No. 1 team in the state in Central Dauphin in the first round, Baldwin bowed out in the second round. The Highlander­s (13-11) had multiple players in foul trouble early and paid for it. Plymouth

Whitemarsh (25-3) knocked down 15 of 19 free-throw attempts in the first half to build a 26-12 lead at the break. The Colonials went 17 of 21 from the stripe for the game. Baldwin had one player reach double figures in Emily Hillgartne­r, who scored 10.

Class 3A

Mohawk 61, Carlynton 44: In Tuesday’s only matchup of WPIAL teams, the Warriors knocked out the Cougars. Hannah McDaniel paced Mohawk (24-3) with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Paige Julian added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Karly McCutcheon netted 12. The Warriors knocked down 14 of 17 free throws. Jada Lee of Carlynton (16-10) racked up a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, but she was held to two points in the second half.

Beaver 48, Penn Cambria 36: Beaver led, 22-20, at halftime before taking off on a 14-0 run in the third quarter to pull ahead for good. Payton List finished with 21 points to lead the charge, followed by Maddi Weiland with 13 and Emma Pavelek with 11. Before that second-half spurt, the Bobcats (23-4) found themselves in a back-andforth first half. Beaver began the game with an 8-0 run and held a commanding 14-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Penn Cambria (16-11) stormed back in the second quarter, outscoring Beaver 18-8.

Class 2A

Ellis School 47, Everett 35: The Tigers (20-7) won a state playoff game for the first time in school history. Natalie Graf made seven 3pointers en route to a seasonhigh 25 points. Graf hit five 3s and had 17 points by halftime. Natalie Jasper contribute­d 18 points.
