1763 An uprising by Ottawa Chief Pontiac against white settlers brought all of the inhabitants from outside Fort Pitt into the confines of the fort. Most of the surrounding homes were demolished.
1867 U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward reached agreement with Russia to purchase the territory of Alaska for $7.2 million, a deal ridiculed by critics as “Seward’s Folly.”
1936 The National Guard, which had been called in to keep order during St. Patrick’s Day flood, was withdrawn and the Golden Triangle was reopened. 1978 Pennsylvania government authorized over $55 million in federal, state and local funds to pay for the first phase of the proposed East Busway in Allegheny County. 1981 President Ronald Reagan was shot and seriously injured outside a Washington, D.C. hotel by John W. Hinckley, Jr.; also wounded were White House press secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy and a District of Columbia police officer, Thomas Delahanty.
2010 President Barack Obama signed a single measure sealing his health care overhaul.
