Township commissioner resigns before moving to Pine
Ross Commissioner Jeremy Shaffer is resigning because he is moving out of the township.
Mr. Shaffer, who represents the 8th Ward and is the only Republican on the board, said he is moving to Pine because his family has outgrown its home.
“Ross is a great place to live, and I hope that in my service I have helped do my small part to leave it a little better than I found it,” he said. “Looking back over the time I have served there is so much that has been done by all of the members of the various boards, past and present. I am particularly proud of those efforts we have done for preserving green space, rebuilding our infrastructure, encouraging smart development like The Block at Northway and utilizing technology to make our government more efficient and accessible.”
Mr. Shaffer said he and his wife, Stacey, moved to Ross in 2009 from Pittsburgh. He was first elected to the commission in 2013 and ran unsuccessfully for state Senate in 2017.
“Thank you for your service to the community,” said commission President Steve Korbel. “You are leaving it better than you and I both found it when we came on together in January of 2014.”
In other business, commissioners approved a preliminary agreement with Suburban Whitetail Management of Pennsylvania to hold an archery hunt to thin the deer population. Commissioner Dan DeMarco noted the company previously did a controlled archery hunt in Franklin Park. A final plan will be presented and voted on June 15.
Commissioners also approved an ordinance switching to monthly sewer bills instead of quarterly bills.
Mr. Korbel announced there will be one polling place in Ross for the June 2 primary election, at the public works garage on Cemetery Lane. “I encourage everybody to consider voting by mail. It is the ultimate social distancing,” he said.
