Central Catholic’s Salvitti grabs Tri-State Open lead

Rocco Salvitti, a sophomore at Central Catholic High School, shot a 5-under 67 to take the first-round lead in the 36-hole Tri-State Open at Williams Country Club in Weirton, W.Va.

Salvitti, who finished sixth in the WPIAL Class AAA championsh­ip and seventh in the PIAA championsh­ip, has a one-shot lead on profession­al Ty Roush of Riverside GC in Mason, W.Va., heading into the final round Tuesday.

Salvitti is trying to become the third amateur in the past five years to win the Tri-State Open.

Pros Devin Gee of Oakmont, John Aber of Allegheny and Brett Carman of Valley Brook and amateur Rick Stimmel of Diamond Run are two shots back.

Colleges

A football player at West Virginia has tested positive for the coronaviru­s, the school said on the first day of voluntary workouts. The school’s athletic department said that contact tracing identified other football players who could have been exposed.

• Attorneys filed a lawsuit against the NCAA in federal court that seeks to prevent the associatio­n from limiting the amount of money athletes can make off their names, images and likenesses.

• Morgan Burke, the longest serving athletic director in Purdue history, died at his home. He was 68.

Soccer

Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant has joined the ownership group of Major League Soccer’s Philadelph­ia Union. Durant, a 10time NBA All-Star, has a 5% ownership stake, with an option for 5% more in the near future.
