1868 The city of Pittsburgh extended its eastern boundary by annexing the townships of Pitt, Peebles, Liberty, Collins and Oakland. 1909 Forbes Field, named after the head of the British forces in 1758, Gen.l John Forbes, was dedicated; 30,338 people watched the Pirates lose the opening game to the Chicago Cubs, 3-2.

1934 Adolf Hitler launched his “blood purge” of political and military rivals in Germany in what came to be known as “The Night of the Long Knives.”

1971 The Supreme Court ruled, 6-3, the government could not prevent The New York Times or The Washington Post from publishing the Pentagon Papers. 1986 The University of Pittsburgh received a $4.6 million federal grant for a research center in which drugs against AIDS would be tested.

2010 President Barack Obama talked about the economy at a town hall in Racine, Wis., saying, “We got it moving again,” and he intended to get “our debt and our deficits under control” but warned he wouldn’t slash spending at the expense of the economic rebound.
