1861 Confederat­e forces routed Union troops in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in Missouri, the first major engagement of the Civil War west of the Mississipp­i River.

1921 Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with polio at his summer home on the Canadian island of Campobello.

1951 In connection with the Penn-Lincoln Parkway project, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad agreed to remove its passenger station and build a new one at the foot of Grant Street.

1954 Bryn J. Hovde, executive director of the Pittsburgh Housing Associatio­n and a nationally known expert on housing, died at the age of 58 after he was stricken on a Downtown streetcar.

1988 President Ronald Reagan signed a measure providing $20,000 payments to still-living Japanese-Americans who were interned by their government during World War II.

2010 The House pushed through an emergency $26 billion jobs bill that Democrats said would save 300,000 teachers, police and others from layoffs; President Barack Obama immediatel­y signed it into law.
