On this day, August 10

1861 Confederate forces routed Union troops in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in Missouri, the first major engagement of the Civil War west of the Mississippi River.

1921 Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with polio at his summer home on the Canadian island of Campobello.

1951 In connection with the Penn-Lincoln Parkway project, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad agreed to remove its passenger station and build a new one at the foot of Grant Street.

1954 Bryn J. Hovde, executive director of the Pittsburgh Housing Association and a nationally known expert on housing, died at the age of 58 after he was stricken on a Downtown streetcar.

1988 President Ronald Reagan signed a measure providing $20,000 payments to still-living Japanese-Americans who were interned by their government during World War II.

2010 The House pushed through an emergency $26 billion jobs bill that Democrats said would save 300,000 teachers, police and others from layoffs; President Barack Obama immediately signed it into law.
