San Diego acquires Clevinger for playoff run
Indians trade ace for young players
The contending San Diego Padres acquired Mike Clevinger in a multiplayer deal with the Cleveland Indians on Monday, bolstering their rotation with another bold move ahead of baseball’s trade deadline.
San Diego got Clevinger, outfielder Greg Allen and a player to be named from Cleveland for a package of young players that included outfielder Josh Naylor, right- hander Cal Quantrill and promising catcher Austin Hedges.
The acquisition of Clevinger is the Padres’ fifth big trade since Saturday.
The Padres made a smaller deal right at the 4 p. m. deadline, picking up reliever Taylor Williams from Seattle for a player to be named later.
Marlins
Miami acquired 31- yearold outfielder Starling Marte, a former Pirate, in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks giving the Marlins a versatile hitter and defender as they try to make a surprising push for the playoffs. The Diamondbacks received pitchers Caleb Smith, Humberto Mejia and a player to be named.
Cubs
Chicago acquired veteran outfielder Cameron Maybin and two left- handed relievers in three trades adding some help for their pursuit of their first division title since 2017. The NL Central leaders sent minor league infielder Zack Short to Detroit for Maybin, who is batting .244 with a homer and two RBIs in 14 games this year. The Cubs got left- hander Andrew Chafin and a cash consideration from Arizona for a player to be named or cash. Reliever Josh Osich was acquired in a deal with Boston for a player to be named or cash.
Reds
Cincinnati acquired reliever Archie Bradley from Arizona just before the trade deadline, boosting their bullpen as they try to stay in the playoff race. The Diamondbacks received outfielders Josh VanMeter and Stuart Fairchild in the deal.
Blue Jays
Toronto acquired lefthander Robbie Ray in a trade with Arizona, giving the Blue Jays a former AllStar who has struggled so far in 2020. The Diamondbacks got left- hander Travis
Bergen in the deal. Toronto received cash considerations.
Dodgers
An hour after Baseball’s trade deadline came and went, Los Angeles announced they traded righthander Ross Stripling to the Toronto for two players to be named later.
Rockies
Colorado added outfield depth by acquiring Kevin Pillar from Boston. In exchange, the Red Sox received a player to be named or cash along with international amateur signing bonus pool space.
Mets
New York acquired infielder Todd Frazier and catcher Robinson Chirinos from Texas, and also made a trade with Baltimore for right- hander Miguel Castro. Texas receives two players to be named, and New York also receives cash in the deal involving Chirinos. The Orioles acquired minor league left- hander Kevin Smith and a player to be named from the Mets.
Phillies
Philadelphia acquired right- hander David Phelps from Milwaukee before the trade deadline for three players to be named.
Elsewhere
Major League Baseball has postponed two of the three scheduled games against the Mariners in Seattle due to a positive COVID- 19 test out of the Oakland’s traveling party reported Sunday. “Out of an abundance of caution and to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to be performed within the Oakland Athletics organization, the scheduled games between the A’s and the host Seattle Mariners at T- Mobile Park on Tuesday, and Wednesday have been postponed,” a statement released by MLB read.
