Shopping event invites people to give to the Community Chest.
The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership has unveiled a twist on the board game Monopoly to promote shopping in Downtown. But instead of purchasing houses and hotels, the goal is to get people buying clothes, decor and other finds from retailers in the Golden Triangle.
The Shopopoly initiative will be in full swing from noon to 4 p. m. Saturday, with 20 participating retailers. There’s no passing “go” and collecting $ 200 in this version, but there are more than $ 5,000 in prizes up for grabs, including gift cards, hotel stays, jewelry and more. The event is part of the PDP’s REFORGE Downtown efforts to encourage people to safely engage with Downtown Pittsburgh again through creative programs and activities like Shopopoly.
Here’s how it works: Pick up a game card at one of the participating retailers or in Market Square on the day of the event. The card will feature color- coded sections on it. To up your chances to win big, shop at as many retailers in as many different colored sections on the game card as you can. Once you’ve shopped till you dropped, return your stamped game card to a participating retailer or in Market Square. Winners will be selected Monday and notified by phone and via email.
“Retailers need our support now more than ever, and if we value them as an important asset in maintaining a vibrant community, it is critical that we show it by shopping Downtown stores and dining at Downtown restaurants,” PDP president and CEO Jeremy Waldrup said in a prepared statement. “These retailers have shown incredible determination and resilience under highly challenging circumstances,” as a result of COVID- 19 shutdowns and other restrictions.
Boutique la Passerelle, Fresh Nostalgia, Heinz Healey’s, Peter Lawrence, Larrimor’s, PG& H, Steel City Clothing, Joseph Orlando Clothiers, 306 Forbes Boutique & Brow Bar, and love, Pittsburgh are among the participating retailers. For a full list, visit DowntownPittsburgh. com/ Shopopoly.
