Bengals, Burrows lose first

Rookie QB fails to pull out win

-

Joe Burrow ran 23 yards for a touchdown in his NFL debut and put the Bengals in range for a dramatic, last- minute win. Instead, he ended up like so many Cincinnati quarterbacks before him, wondering what the heck just happened.

The Heisman Trophy winner and national champion from LSU threw an interception on a shovel pass to thwart one late scoring chance, and he watched as Randy Bullock missed a 31- yard field goal with 2 seconds left Sunday, clinching the Chargers’ 16- 13 win.

The only rookie quarterback to start the first week got a rough introduction to the NFL. Without a preseason, Burrow was taking his first snaps in a game.

“I made too many mistakes to win the game,” Burrow said.

Browns

Odell Beckham Jr. watched the ball hit his hands, then the ground. Cleveland fell just as easily. In a season opener filled with mistakes, Beckham’s dropped pass in the first half of Sunday’s 38- 6 loss to Baltimore was just one example. “They out- coached us, they outplayed us,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said after a painful debut. “We did a lot of things losing teams do. We’ve got a lot to clean up.”

Buccaneers

Tom Brady ( 43 years old) and New Orleans’ Drew Brees ( 41) faced off in the first game in NFL history in which both starting quarterbacks were 40 or older. The Saints won, 34- 23. It also was the first matchup since 1950 to feature the top two career leaders in touchdown passes.

Packers

Davante Adams tied Don Hutson’s franchise mark from Nov. 22, 1942, by catching 14 passes in a 43- 36 win at Minnesota.

Patriots

Cam Newton ran 15 times for 75 yards in a 2111 win against Miami, the most yards rushing by a New England quarterback since Steve Grogan had 81 in 1977.
