Cincinnati’s Brennaman steps down

Anti- gay slur on open mic led to dismissal

The Cincinnati Reds announced that team broadcaste­r Thom Brennaman resigned after his use of an antigay slur recently on the air.

Brennaman used the slur moments after the feed from the Fox Sports Ohio telecast returned from a commercial break on Aug. 19. Brennaman did not seem to realize he was already on air.

“The Reds respect Thom Brennaman’s decision to step away from the broadcast booth and applaud his heartfelt efforts of reconcilia­tion with the LGBTQ+ community,” Reds CEO Bob Castellini said.

Padres

Right- hander Mike Clevinger is uncertain to pitch in the wild- card round of the playoffs after being diagnosed with an elbow impingemen­t in his throwing arm. General manager A. J. Preller said the plan is to wait and see how he feels after a cortisone shot.

Nationals

Manager Dave Martinez and the team agreed to work out a contract extension that will keep him in charge of the club according to a source. Martinez led Washington to the franchise’s first World Series championsh­ip in 2019.

White Sox

Outfielder Eloy Jimenez has a sprained right foot, likely keeping the slugger out for a pivotal season- ending series against the crosstown Cubs.

Royals

Outfielder Alex Gordon, whose roller- coaster career took him from near bust to All- Star and Gold Glove winner, will retire after the season.

Brewers

Pitcher Corbin Burnes was placed on the injured list with a strained left oblique, likely ending the righthande­r’s breakthrou­gh season.
