PPT and the ‘Mad Guys’

The Pittsburgh Public Theater has been streaming a version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” with Tony winner Jefferson Mays playing more than 50 roles. It continues through Jan. 3.

Now, the PPT adds “The Gift of the Mad Guys” as part of the Public PlayTime. In this adaptation, which begins Thursday and runs through Sunday, Brian Pope puts his own spin on O. Henry’s romantic comedy “The Gift of the Magi.”

Here is how the PPT describes it: “For Wes and Andrew, the arrival of the most wonderful time of the year during the less-than-wonderful year of 2020 is bittersweet. When the world shut down, their wedding fund became … well, let’s just say it became socially distant. Since then, Andrew’s focus on his work as a hair stylist has turned him away from all things merry and bright. Wes is obsessed with the Hallmark Channel, so even with their dwindling dollars, he still believes in the spirit of the season and exchanging thoughtful (and luxurious) gifts! Their charmingly opposite ways spark a few seasonal debates, which have the neighbors all abuzz.”

Donations, which start at $10, allow access to the live reading as well as a recording to view throughout Sunday. Go to ppt.org/ subscribe.
