1848 The Mercury published the city’s first Sunday newspaper.

1943 Judge Sara M. Soffel, of Common Pleas Court, became the first woman ever to preside over an Allegheny County criminal court.

1960 Four Black college students began a sit-in protest at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., where they’d been refused service.

2009 The Steelers claimed their record sixth Super Bowl title against the Arizona

Cardinals, 27-23.
