FISHING REPORT

- — By John Hayes

Anglers should be particularly careful on melting ice. Lakes managed for the Stocked Trout Waters Open to Year-Round Fishing program are open for fishing, but trout cannot be possessed or harvested until opening day (April 3). The only exception is the statewide Mentored Youth Day March 27. Streams designated Trout Stocked Waters are closed to fishing until the statewide opening of trout season, with the exception of waters designated Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only.

Lake Erie and tributaries (Erie County) Recent rain made slush of snow over ice. Throwaway perch and a few keepers were taken on the bay. Rain and snow melt opened some steelhead trout streams.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County) Before the thaw, ice anglers were catching panfish in waters managed for the Panfish Enhancement program. Crappie must be 9 inches to harvest, and the creel limit is 20.

Allegheny River (Armstrong County) Pre-spawn Northern pike were caught under ice in shallow coves.
