The Allegheny Intermediate Unit announced Monday that it had hired a “a committed agent of change” for its new position of director of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Michael Jones, who performs recruiting and diversity management activities for BNY Mellon, will start at the AIU on March 22.

The AIU said the newly created position was part of a larger effort to provide leadership in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion.

“As a public education organization, the AIU must be able to assist school districts and organizations in our region as we work together to overcome overt and systemic forms of racism and discrimination,” said Robert Scherrer, AIU executive director. “I believe that the creation of this new position will allow us to provide leadership and support in this area.”

In addition to working for BNY Mellon, Mr. Jones has served as the Pittsburgh regional co-chair of IMPACT, an employee resource group that promotes the advancement of multiethnic/racial employees. He previously worked in higher education in both enrollment management and career development.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from Seton Hill University and a master’s degree in social work from California University of Pennsylvania.

The board of the AIU unanimously approved Mr. Jones’ appointment at a meeting Feb. 22.

The AIU provides specialized services to Allegheny County’s 42 suburban school districts as well as non-public, charter and vocational- technical schools.

It also serves as a liaison with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. And it operates three schools for exceptional children, 10 family centers and about 130 programs for children, adults and families.
