Stony Brook basketball gets big assist from North Allegheny grad

The Stony Brook women’s basketball team is going to the NCAA Division I tournament for the first time and North Allegheny graduate Hailey Zeise helped the Seawolves get there. Stony Brook defeated Maine to win the America East Conference tournament last Friday and Zeise was selected to the All-Championsh­ip Team. Zeise, a senior forward, started 18 of the team’s 19 games. She averages only 2 points, but is a defensive specialist, leading the team in blocks with 25.

Blackhawk baseball Blackhawk baseball standout now the top hitter for Wake Forest

After nine games, the leading hitter for the Wake Forest baseball team is from the WPIAL. Mike Turconi, a former Post-Gazette Player of the Year at Blackhawk High School, came into the week hitting .351 with four doubles and seven RBIs. He was among the top 25 hitters in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Turconi is an infielder who was hitting .351 last year when the season was stopped by COVID19. He started 42 games two years ago.

Delaware’s productive kicker is a sophomore from South Fayette

The University of Delaware is playing a spring football schedule at the FCS level and Ryan Coe is off to a fast start as the Blue Hens’ kicker. Coe, a sophomore from South Fayette High School, has kicked four field goals in the first two games for Delaware. He kicked three in the opener and added one more in a 31-3 victory against Maine this past Saturday. Coe’s long in the two games is from 45 yards. He also has made all eight extra points.
