South Fayette knocks off No. 5 Shaler in Section 3

A one-man wrecking crew helped South Fayette continue its winnings ways and knock off Class 5A No. 5 Shaler, 5-3, in Section 3.

Chase Krewson’s offense helped the Lions (9-1, 4-1) build a lead before his defense preserved the victory. Krewson had three hits and drove in two runs, then chased down a ball at the fence to end the game, saving what could have been the tying or winning runs for Shaler (6-2, 4-1).

More baseball

• Tyrus Kerr singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give Highlands (6-3, 4-1) a 6-5 walk-off victory against No. 5 Burrell (1-7, 0-5) in Class 4A Section 1.

• Ethan Blair did a little bit of everything in a big 14-4 Class 1A Section 1 win for Rochester (5-2, 4-1) against Western Beaver (1-4, 1-2). Blair struck out 10 in five innings, had two hits and drove in three runs.

• Brady Guvula and Conner McTighe had three hits apiece for Butler (5-3, 4-1) as it edged Pine-Richland (36, 1-4) in 6A Section 1, 5-4.

• Franklin Regional (7-0, 5-0) secured a 9-2 Section 1 victory against McKeesport (1-4, 0-3) as Tim Quinn, Anthony Alesi and Trevor Brncic each drove in two runs.

• Beaver (2-5, 2-3) scored 10 runs in the first three innings to beat Ambridge, 10-8, in 4A Section 2. The Bridgers (2-5, 1-4) scored six runs over the final three innings.

• Nate Brestenski of Keystone Oaks went 4 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs to help the Golden Eagles (5-2) topple the 5A No. 4 Plum (42), 8-7.

• Seton LaSalle (8-1, 50), the No. 1 team in 2A, powered by Gio Lonero’s grand slam, scored 10 runs in the top of the eighth and ran away with an 11-1 Section 4 victory against Chartiers-Houston (7-3, 5-2).

Softball

• With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Belle Vernon’s Abby Fabin knocked in Lexi Daniels for the winning run to lift the Leopards (7-3, 4-1) to a thrilling 3-2 triumph against 4A No.3 Yough (6-2, 3-2) in a Section 2 showdown.

• Frazier (7-3, 5-0) continued its offensive tear, beating California (3-5, 2-2), 200, in Class 2A Section 3. Sophomores Maria Felsher and Delaney Warnick drove in five and four runs, respective­ly.

• Payton Laflash bashed a grand slam and Karlee Russell went 4 for 4 with two doubles for Ringgold (2-6, 14) in its 18-7 rout of Laurel Highlands (1-6, 0-5) in 4A Section 2.

• Cate Gordon blasted a two-run homer in the first inning and Shaler (6-2, 4-0) beat Mars (2-5, 1-3), 13-3, in 5A Section 3. Megan Povich had four hits and drove in three runs.
