“Crisis”: Three separate stories collide in director Nicholas Jarecki’s examinatio­n of drug abuse in the United States. The movie stars Gary Oldman, Evangeline Lilly and Armie Hammer, who has been at the center of multiple sexual misconduct claims and is under investigat­ion by the LAPD.

“The Violent Heart”: A man finds himself falling for a high school senior 15 years after the murder of his older sister overturned his life in this drama starring Grace Van Patten, Jovan Adepo and Lukas Haas.

“Body Brokers”: An Ohio addict accepts a stranger’s offer to pay for his drug treatment at a Los Angeles facility. The addict, however, discovers the facility is actually defrauding the government out of millions. Written and directed by John Swab.

“Space Dogs: Tropical Adventure”: This Russian animated feature follows two pooches who are sent to investigat­e a whirlpool in the Atlantic Ocean, only to discover aliens are trying to steal the planet’s water.

“The Mortuary Collection”: Written and directed by Ryan Spindell, this fantasy horror film finds an eccentric mortician recounting the history the fictional town of Raven’s End to a young girl.

NEW MOVIES

“Mortal Kombat” (theaters, HBO Max): First-timer Simon McQuoid directs the latest bigscreen adaptation of the video game franchise.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY

Eric Church, “Soul”: The follow-up to “Heart” and the fan-exclusive “&,” “Soul” is the third piece of the country-rocker’s 24-song “Heart & Soul” trilogy.

Dinosaur Jr., “Sweep It Into Space”: The 12th album, and first since 2016, from the Amherst, Mass., noise-rock band was co-produced with Kurt Vile, who also turns up on the song “I Ran Away.”

Tom Jones, “Surrounded by Time”: The 42nd album from the Welsh legend, and first since 2015, finds him working with producers Ethan Johns and Mark Woodward on songs by Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam, The Waterboys, Todd Snider and more.

Todd Snider, “First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder”: The Americana singersong­writer’s 19th album features tributes to John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker while also capturing the “fatback” rhythms made famous by the funk and reggae stars of the ’60s and ’70s.

WHAT’S ON TV

“Rutherford Falls” (Thursday, Peacock): Ed Helms stars in this new sitcom from “The Good Place” creator Mike Schur focused on the relationsh­ip between residents of a tiny upstate New York town and members of a Native American reservatio­n.

“Stowaway” (Thursday, Netflix): Toni Collette, Daniel Dae Kim and Anna Kendrick star as three astronauts aboard a spacecraft headed to Mars. One problem: They soon discover there’s actually a fourth person (Shamier Anderson) on their ship, and he seems to have damaged the life support systems.

“Hell’s Kitchen” (8 p.m. Thursday, WPGH): In the new Season 19 finale, “Hitting the Jackpot,” the two final chefs compete in their most important cooking challenge yet, which will determine who receives a lifechangi­ng grand prize.

“Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World” (8 p.m. Thursday, WQED): Airing in its entirety for Earth Day, this three-part docuseries follows teenage environmen­tal activist Thunberg on her crusade to raise awareness of climate change around the world.

2021 Film Independen­t Spirit Awards (10 p.m. Thursday, IFC): From the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, Calif., “Saturday Night Live” cast member Melissa Villasenor hosts the 36th annual edition of these awards honoring the year’s best independen­t films — and, for the first time this year, TV shows and performers.

“Shadow and Bone” (Friday, Netflix): Based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestsellin­g Grishavers­e novels, this fantasy adventure takes us to a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) has unleashed an extraordin­ary power that could be the key to setting her country free.

“Great Performanc­es” (9 p.m. Friday, WQED): Two of Britain’s fastest-rising young stars — Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles in “The Crown”) and Jessie Buckley (HBO’s “Chernobyl”) — play star-crossed lovers “Romeo and Juliet” in this stylized film of Simon Godwin’s National Theatre staging of Shakespear­e’s timeless classic.

“A Black Lady Sketch Show” (11 p.m. Friday, HBO): The sketch comedy series returns for a second season of six episodes, with new featured players Laci Mosley and Skye Townsend joining returning core cast members Robin Thede, Gabrielle Dennis and Ashley Nicole Black.

“Ghost Brothers: Lights Out” (8 p.m. Saturday, TRAV): TV’s only Black paranormal

crusaders — Atlanta-based trio Dalen Spratt, Juwan Mass and Marcus Harvey — anchor this new ghost-busting series, which starts with Mass and Harvey investigat­ing an allegedly haunted property with no prior knowledge of the site.

The Oscars (8 p.m. Sunday, WTAE): Broadcast from both the Dolby Theatre and Union Station in Los Angeles, the 93rd Academy Awards is expected to be largely a virtual affair, owing to pandemic health restrictio­ns.

“Top Gear” (8 p.m. Sunday): BBC Hosts Freddie Flintoff, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness take the wheel for their fourth season of this long-running motoring show, which sees the trio dealing with the issue of “midlife crisis cars.”

“90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?” (8 p.m. Sunday, TLC): This hit reality spinoff series returns for Season 6, catching up with couples from past seasons of the “90 Day” show as they move into the next chapter of their relationsh­ips.

“Extreme Sisters” (10:10 p.m. Sunday, TLC): The love between sisters is often a beautiful thing, but this new docuseries looks at some of the most obsessive such relationsh­ips imaginable, including sisters who insist on eating the same foods to even sharing a boyfriend.
