Park name to honor Bruno Sammartino

Ross Township officials will rename Sangree Park in honor of Bruno Sammartino in a ceremony Friday at 1 p.m. at the park.

Mr. Sammartino, once the World Wide Wrestling Federation heavyweight champion, was a longtime resident of the area. He died in 2018.

The name change was suggested last month. P.J. Murray, township solicitor, said he reviewed the deed for the property and did not find any name restrictions, paving the way for the change.

Sangree Park is 9.33 acres and includes a ballfield, a basketball court, a pavilion and a playground.

In a related move, commissioners awarded a contract to pave the basketball court there to McElroy Paving for $163,765.

Commissioners also voted to seek bids to construct a new gazebo along Route 19 in Perrysville. The former gazebo had been deemed unsafe and was demolished.

In other actions, commissioners voted to move the May business meeting to May 19 because of the primary election. The municipal building will not be used as a polling place because of the county’s vaccination clinic.

Residents in four districts who normally vote at the municipal building will be voting at the township’s public works building on Cemetery Lane.

Commissioners also tabled two development issues. One, the consolidation of three lots into one owned by Minnock Construction, was opposed by neighborhood residents. The other issue was rezoning a parcel at 3424 Evergreen Road from R-1 to R-4.
