1882 President Chester Alan Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which barred Chinese immigrants from the U.S. for 10 years.

1915 Babe Ruth hit his first majorleagu­e home run while playing for the Boston Red Sox.

1937 Andrew W. Mellon dedicated the $10 million Mellon Institute at the start of a five-day program in Carnegie Music Hall, highlighte­d by an announceme­nt of a new successful treatment for pneumonia developed by institute scientists. Among the scores of leading scientists in attendance were three Nobel Prize winners — H.C. Urey, W.P. Murphy and Irving Langmuir.

1954 Medical student Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile during a track meet in Oxford, England, in 3:59.4.

1988 Popular Pittsburgh Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri died at 56.

2004 The University Club sold its 81-yearold building in Oakland to the University of Pittsburgh for $3.1 million.
