Blackhawk twins star as Central Valley falls

Malagise brothers energize offense with homer, grand slam in victory

Blackhawk’s Malagise twins were too much for Central Valley on Wednesday.

Anthony Malagise went 4 for 4 and drove in the winning run on a walk-off double in the eighth inning to lift Class 4A No. 1 Blackhawk to a 7-6 triumph against Central Valley in Section 2.

Jarrod Malagise hit a grand slam in the fifth, this after his brother hit a solo homer in the second.

Austin Thellman pitched the final two innings for Blackhawk (12-2, 7-2) to pick up the win.

Starter Alex Tomsic gave up two runs and struck out 10 in six innings.

Central Valley fell to 5-11 overall, 3-6 in section play.

More baseball

• In a game that featured six home runs, Spencer Barnett hit two of them and knocked in four runs to help Class 6A No. 2 North Allegheny (14-2, 8-1) rally for a 87 win at Pine- Richland in Section 1.

• Class 6A No. 1 Norwin (11-1, 7-1) extended its win streak to eight courtesy of a 3-0 home win against No. 4 Hempfield (10-6, 6-3) in Section 2. Jake Bazala pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win and Alex Gabauer went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

• Winning pitcher Alex Heavner allowed two hits over 5⅓ innings and went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to help Mars (9-5, 6-3) pick up a 13-1 sixinning win at Penn Hills (2-12, 1-8) in Class 5A Section 2.

Softball

• Reagan Milliken’s 2-run home run in the fourth helped Class 6A No. 1 Bethel Park (11-0) remain undefeated after a 3-1 non-section win at Class 4A No. 3 West Mifflin (13-2). West Mifflin’s Lauren Yuhas hit her 10th home run of the season.

• Sydney Lokay fired a 1hitter with 10 strikeouts and Madie Kessler and Liz Waszkiewic­z had three RBIs apiece to help Class 6A No. 3 Norwin (11-2, 8-1) roll to a 10-0 five-inning home win against No. 2 Hempfield (8-4, 4-3) in Section 2.

• Latrobe (6-3, 4-1) used a seven-run first inning to hand Class 5A No. 1 Penn-Trafford (10-4, 8-1) its first section loss, 15- 8, in Section 2. Latrobe’s Jenna Tallman had a home run and four RBIs and Josie Straigis added a home run and three RBIs.

• Ligonier Valley star Madison Griffin tossed her eighth no-hitter of the season to lead the Class 2A No. 2 Rams (13-1, 10-0) to a 10-0 five-inning win against visiting Steel Valley (6-6, 6-5) in Section 2. Griffin had 13 strikeouts and allowed her only baserunner on a hit by pitch.

Stars of the night

• Brandon Robaugh had three RBIs, including a walkoff single in the seventh, to give host Trinity (4-9, 1-7) its first section win, 10- 9, against Albert Gallatin (2-5, 24) in Class 5A Section 4.

• Olivia Vissari hit three home runs and had seven RBIs to lead Knoch (6-7, 5-3) to a 20-9 five-inning win at Freeport (6-6, 4-4) in Class 4A Section 1. One of Vissari’s home runs came via a grand slam.
