LANDING GOES UP
With COVID-19 restrictions easing and revenues rebounding, a $60 million hotel once again is in the cards for Rivers Casino.
The North Shore venue has restarted construction on the Landing Hotel Pittsburgh after shutting it down for more than a year because of the pandemic.
“We’re excited to get The Landing Hotel Pittsburgh back underway,” said Bud Green, the casino’s assistant general manager. “It’s been a long time coming, and we’re eager to add this new hospitality venue to our North Shore offerings.”
With the pandemic raging, the casino halted the hotel’s construction 15 months ago, leaving a lifeless steel skeleton in its wake. At the time, it was unsure when construction would get going again.
This week, contractor Massaro Corp. returned to the site to resume the steel beam framing with hopes of completing the project next year.
When completed, the sevenstory, four-star hotel is expected to feature 219 rooms, including 10 luxury terrace suites, each with private first-floor patios and a host of other amenities.
It is being built on the riverfront on the east side of the property near Carnegie Science Center and will be attached to the casino. “Expansive windows” will offer guests views of Point State Park and its fountain and Mount Washington.
The casino sees the hotel as supplementing and building upon other amenities like an events center, restaurants and bars, and its sportsbook.
In addition to gamblers, the casino — with Heinz Field nearby — is banking on the hotel attracting sports fans as well as business people.
The project is expected to generate 1,400 construction jobs and about 128 permanent jobs once it opens.
