Ledecky busy with two wins

200, 1,500 freestyle on Tokyo list

Katie Ledecky got started on a very busy night at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials by winning the 200-meter freestyle Wednesday in Omaha, Neb., claiming a spot in her second individual event at the Tokyo Games.

Ledecky later touched the wall ahead of everyone else in the 1,500 freestyle, a new event for the women at these pandemic-delayed Olympics. Her time was 15 minutes, 40.50 seconds.

The 200 was one of four gold medals Ledecky won at the Rio Games. She’ll get a chance to defend that title after touching in 1 minute, 55.11 seconds, a full body length ahead of the field.

Allison Schmitt, who won this event at the 2012 London Games, is headed to her fourth Olympics at age 31 after holding off Paige Madden by one-hundredth of a second for the runnerup spot behind Ledecky.

Colleges

Ryland Gandy, a threestar cornerback, committed to Pitt, marking the fourth new member of the 2022 class in the past five days. Gandy is the seventh member of Pitt’s 2022 class. He is a 6-foot, 170-pound defensive back that had scholarshi­p offers from 18 schools.

• Jim Phelan, the bow -tied basketball coach who won 830 games during nearly a half-century at Mount St. Mary’s, has died in Emmitsburg, Md.. He was 92. See obituary. Page B-4.

Baseball

Trevor Casanova led the Wild Things (9-10) with with two doubles and an RBI, as Washington defeated the Florence Y’alls (12-7), 5-1, in Florence, Ky. Nick Ward went 2 for 3 with two runs scored to support starter Keven Pimentel (3-1) who earned the win.

Soccer

Midfielder Manuel Locatelli scored two goals and Italy beat Switzerlan­d, 3-0, to become the first team to reach the last 16 at Euro 2020. Italian police closed off streets about 2 kilometers from the Stadio Olimpico in Rome after an explosive device was found attached to a parked car about four hours before the match.

• Gareth Bale set up both goals in Wales’ 2-0 victory against Turkey in Baku, Azerbaijan. The win moved the Welsh closer to a place in the last 16 in Group A.

• Aleksei Miranchuk led Russia to a 1-0 win against Finland in St. Petersburg. Russia is tied on points with the Finns, who missed a chance to reach the last 16.
