Urshela helps Yankees avoid Subway sweep

Gio Urshela hit a three-run homer and the New York Yankees saved a little face by beating the Mets, 4-2, Sunday night to avoid a Subway Series sweep.

In the opener, Pete Alonso hit a tying home run off Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman leading off the seventh inning and Jose Peraza had a goahead, two-run double that included interferen­ce from a visiting fan in the Bronx in a 105 Mets win. The Mets also won on Saturday.

Alonso connected in the late game as well, becoming the first Mets player since Shawn Green on Sept 6, 2006, to homer in both ends of a doublehead­er.

Garrett escaped a jam in the ninth, and host Cincinnati handed the Chicago Cubs their ninth consecutiv­e loss.

Rockies 3, Cardinals 2: Elias Diaz delivered a two-out run-scoring single in the ninth and Colorado’s German Marquez followed up his near nohitter of the Pirates by striking out 11 in a win against visiting St. Louis.

Braves 8, Marlins 7: Pinchhitti­ng pitcher Max Fried lined a bases-loaded single in the 10th, lifting host Atlanta to a victory in 10 innings after a four-run rally in the ninth.

Rays 5, Blue Jays 1: Former Pirate Austin Meadows had three hits, including two RBI doubles, and Tampa Bay ended its 10-game road losing streak with a win in

Dodgers 5, Nationals 1: Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead single as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers won their ninth in a row.

Padres 11, Phillies 1: Manny Machado drove in five runs with a pair of homers, leading San Diego to the victory in Philadelph­ia, ending a three-game losing streak.

Astros 4, Indians 3: Yuli Gurriel scored on a two-out error by pitcher Emmanuel Clase in the 10th, helping visiting Houston complete a fourgame sweep.

Tigers 6, White Sox 5: Jeimer Candelario had three hits, Akil Baddoo drove in two runs and host Detroit held on for its first series win over the Chicagao White Sox since Sept. 3-5, 2018.

Angels 6, Orioles 5:

Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 31st homer in the third, and Juan Lagares ended it with a two-run double in the ninth of the Los Angeles Angels’ comeback victory over visiting Baltimore.

Twins 6, Royals 2: Kenta Maeda struck out a seasonbest 10 in six scoreless innings, Jorge Polanco homered and visiting Minnesota halted a five-game losing streak.

Red Sox 1, Athletics 0: Nick Pivetta struck out 10 over seven innings to win for the first time in seven starts, and visiting Boston scored the only run on a double-play groundout in the sixth. Boston and Oakland played three consecutiv­e one-run games.

Mariners 4, Rangers 1: Luis Torrens homered for the seventh time in his past 13 games and host Seattle beat Texas.
