Perry’s Fearbry decides on Penn State

-

Tyreese Fearbry celebrated July 4th by making his college choice. If you just consider the history of recruiting in Western Pennsylvania, Fearbry’s choice is extremely surprising.

Fearbry, a defensive end at Perry Traditional Academy in the City League, announced on Twitter that he has made a verbal commitment to Penn State. His other finalists were Pitt, Auburn and Kentucky.

Fearbry will be the first Perry player to sign with an FBS school since offensive lineman Cameron Holland signed with North Carolina in 2007.

But Penn State landing a Pittsburgh City League player is extremely rare. It is not known the last time Penn State signed a City player, but it has been at least four decades. Pitt was thought to be the leader for Fearbry for a long time, but things apparently changed when Fearbry visited Penn State in June.

Fearbry is an interesting story, coming out of obscurity and turning into one of the most heavily recruited players in the City League in the past two decades. Fearbry lived in Pittsburgh, but moved to Las Vegas for about seven years, before moving back to the Pittsburgh area in ninth grade. He attended Upper St. Clair as a freshman and did not play football.
