- — Brad Everett

(Fifth in a preseason series on top high school football players in the area.)

THE SCOOP

Beef. It’s what’s for dinner. It’s also what drives Kiski Area’s offensive and defensive lines. Nicknamed “Beef,” Lawhorn Moore is a handful for opposing teams in the trenches. A four-year starter, Lawhorn Moore was an all-conference choice on offense his junior season. This season, he’s set to start at offensive tackle and play nose tackle.

COLLEGE TALK

Lawhorn Moore is one of the most heavily recruited senior offensive linemen in the WPIAL this season. He has Football Bowl Subdivision offers from Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State and Old Dominion, and also has offers from a few Football Championship Subdivision schools. An excellent student, Lawhorn Moore has a 3.8 GPA. He said he likely won’t pick a college until after the season.

OUR QUESTIONS, HIS ANSWERS

OK, how did you get the nickname?

Back in sixth grade we used to have ‘Beef Jerky Fridays.’ My history teacher used to host them. I was the only one who made sure to bring it in every Friday, so he decided to start calling me Beef.

What’s the story with the two last names? My dad’s last name is Moore and my mom’s last name is Lawhorn.

Kiski Area has not won a playoff game since 1990. Will this be the year? Yes, it will definitely be the year. We’ll break that streak of not winning in the playoffs.

Do you keep track of pancake blocks? I keep track of them. I’m not sure if the coaches do. If they did, my whole helmet would be covered in stickers.

How many are you shooting for this season?

About 50. Last year I had 40.

Have you ever scored a touchdown? Never.

Any chance we’ll see you get a chance this season? Possibly. [The coaches] are working on it. I don’t know which game it will be.

Team not on your schedule you wish your team would play? I wish we still played Armstrong. It was a really good rivalry. It’s a good school and I always liked when we played them.

If you were a competitive eater, what would be your top food? Definitely burgers. I can definitely chow down some burgers.

Most wings you have ever eaten in one sitting? Somewhere in the high 20s.

TV show you would recommend? “Rugrats.”

AND FINALLY …

Will you be playing fantasy football this year? I will if I can find a league. Which player do you want the most? Derrick Henry, but it will be tough.
