Riverhound­s SC clash is a draw

The third clash of the year between the Atlantic Division leaders had a playoff feel, and Riverhound­s SC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies finished 90 minutes deadlocked with a 0-0 draw at Highmark Stadium.

The match saw the Riverhound­s (10-6-4) hold 66 percent of possession, but the Rowdies (11-6-1) came out ahead in the shot count, 8-3, and the corner kick total, 43.

Danny Vitiello made three saves to record his fourth shutout of the season for the Riverhound­s, while Tampa Bay goalie Evan Louro did not record a save while picking up the clean sheet.

Baseball

Shortstop Andrew Sohn hit a single to drive in Joe Campagna in the third as the Washington Wild Things (38-35) defeated the visiting Lake Erie Crushers (34-39), 1-0, in the first game of the doublehead­er. With a two-run seventh inning Lake Erie secured a lead and didn’t let it go in the nightcap, earning a doublehead­er split with Washington by a final of 3-2.

• Brownsvill­e, Texas, got two runs in the top of the eighth to secure an 11-10 win against Youngstown, Ohio, to win the PONY League World Series in Washington County. Jeremiah Vela earned the extrainnin­g win for Brownsvill­e.

Basketball

Betnijah Laney scored 17 points, including the goahead basket from the top of the key with 17.6 seconds left, to lift the host New York Liberty (11-12) to an 8379 WNBA victory against the short-handed Seattle Storm (16-7).

Tennis

Second-ranked Naomi Osaka was tested in her first WTA Tour event since the French Open by 17-yearold Coco Gauff, winning in three sets at the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament in Cincinnati.

• Two-time champion Venus Williams will be back at the U.S. Open after being given a wild card into the Grand Slam tournament.

High schools

Pine-Richland is looking for an athletic director. Tom Salopek left the job after just a few months and was named Wednesday as assistant principal at North Allegheny.

Colleges

Duquesne women’s basketball head coach Dan Burt announced that former Western Kentucky guard Fatou Pouye has been added to the roster. Pouye, a 6-foot guard, will join the Dukes as a graduate transfer and will be immediatel­y eligible with one year of eligibilit­y remaining.
