Cardinals C Molina gets deal for 2022

-

Yadier Molina is staying with the St. Louis Cardinals, agreeing to a one-year contract that covers what could be his final season in 2022. The Athletic said the deal is worth $10 million.

St. Louis announced the agreement with its longtime catcher on Tuesday. Molina, 39, broke into the majors with the Cardinals in 2004 and never left. The 10-time AllStar helped the team win the World Series in 2006 and 2011.

Molina’s 2,080 career games behind the plate are the most for any catcher with just one team. He is a ninetime Gold Glove winner. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico, native is a .280 career hitter with 168 homers and 983 RBIs heading into Tuesday night’s game against Detroit.

Arizona left- hander Caleb Smith has been suspended 10 games and fined an undisclosed amount for having a foreign substance on his glove during a game last week.

Smith’s suspension, announced Tuesday, is the second this season as Major League Baseball cracks down on pitchers using sticky substances to get a better grip on the ball.

He has appealed his suspension and was with the Diamondbacks in Pittsburgh Tuesday night. Smith had his glove confiscated after he came off the field in the eighth inning against Philadelphia last Wednesday and was ejected.

Mets

Shortstop Francisco Lindor was activated from the injured list and in the lineup Tuesday night after missing five weeks with a right oblique strain, while ace Jacob deGrom could begin a throwing program soon pending the results of an MRI on Wednesday.

DeGrom has been out since July 7 with right forearm tightness.

Lindor struggled early in the season after being acquired from Cleveland and signing a $341 million, 10year contract. He’s hitting .228 with 11 homers and a .702 OPS on the year.
