Phillies slugger Hoskins on IL with torn abdomen
The Philadelphia Phillies placed slugger Rhys Hoskins back on the injured list Thursday with an abdomen tear that will cause him to miss the rest of the season.
The first baseman said he will likely have surgery to repair the tear within the next week and that the recovery period is six to eight weeks.
Hoskins had been playing through an abdominal injury all season, but he aggravated it when he dived awkwardly for a ball Aug. 5 at Washington.
He spent two weeks on the IL before returning Sunday against San Diego, hitting two homers in 7-4 victory for Philadelphia. Hoskins came off the bench on Tuesday -- he popped up in a 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay -- then started on Wednesday, with a homer in a 7-4 loss.
Hoskins said Thursday he can’t move laterally at first base or run well enough to continue playing.
Red Sox
Ace Chris Sale joined Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax as the only pitchers on record with three immaculate innings when he struck out the side against the Twins on nine pitches. Sale was making his third start for Boston since returning from Tommy John surgery that also sidelined him for the entire 2020 season. He struck out Nick Gordon, Andrelton Simmons and Rob Refsnyder on three pitches each. Sale’s other immaculate innings came less than a month apart in 2019 when he did it against Baltimore May 8 and Kansas City June 5.
Giants
All-Star catcher Buster Posey was out of the starting lineup for the second consecutive game because of discomfort in his left knee.
