U.S. women’s win streak ends
Jamie Rattraw scored twice and Canada overwhelmed the United States, 5-1, Thursday night in the women’s world hockey championship in Calgary, ending the Americans’ winning streak in the event at 29 games. Canada (4-0) took the top spot in Group A to set up a quarterfinal Saturday against the loser of the late Group B game between Germany and Japan. The United States (3-1) will face the Germany-Japan winner.

Philadelphia signed No. 1 center Sean Couturier to an eight-year contract extension worth $62 million. Couturier, 28, counts $7.75 million against the salary cap with his contract that begins after next season and runs through 2029-30. Couturier won the Selke Trophy in 2020 as the league’s best defensive forward.
• Carolina agreed to terms with forward Andrei Svechnikov on an eightyear contract, which will keep the No. 2 overall pick from 2018 with the franchise through the 2028-29 season. The deal will pay Svechnikov, 21, an average annual salary of $7.75 million.
Soccer
The Pitt men, the No. 3ranked team in the preseason, won its season opener by routing visiting Duquesne, 7-0. Veljko Petkovic scored twice in the first half, 68 seconds apart, for the Panthers. It was also the opener for the Dukes (0-1).
Tennis
Novak Djokovic will begin his bid to win the U.S. Open for a men’s-record 21st major tennis championship by facing a player who comes through qualifying. Win that, and Djokovic’s potential path — as determined by Thursday’s draw — could include 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori in the third round. On the women’s side, Naomi Osaka’s first Grand Slam action since she withdrew from the French Open to take a mental health break will come against Marie Bouzkova, a 23-year-old from the Czech Republic who is ranked 86th.

The Washington Wild Things (45-36) scored seven runs in the first innings on their way to a 12-5 win against the visiting Tri-City ValleyCats.
• Michigan routed Texas, 15-6, at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. Jackson Surma drove in three runs for Michigan, which plays Hawaii Saturday. ... Ohio scored three runs in the fifth inning and beat California, 4-2. Ohio plays South Dakota Saturday.
