‘Sprung’ TV series recasts while filming

- By Joshua Axelrod Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

IMDB TV series “Sprung” only recently began filming in Pittsburgh and there’s already been a major shakeup to its core cast.

The single-camera comedy comes from Greg Garcia, the creator of sitcoms like “My Name is Earl” and “Raising Hope.” It stars Garret Dillahunt as Jack, a man trying to turn his life around after serving more than two decades in prison. Phillip Garcia is playing his former cellmate and Illeana Douglas was set to play Jack’s mother, Barb.

Douglas, however, will no longer be working on “Sprung,” IMDB TV confirmed to the Pittsburgh PostGazette. Martha Plimpton will take on the role after the decision was made to recast “due to a creative change to the character,” according to a report from Deadline’s Denis Petski. IMDB TV in an email described Plimpton’s involvement in “Sprung” as a “season-long recurring guest star role.”

Plimpton is an Emmy-nominated actor and is reuniting with her “Raising Hope” co-star Dillahunt and creator Greg Garcia on “Sprung.” She recently starred in the HBO Max series “Generation” and the upcoming film “Mass.”

It was revealed in early July that “Sprung” would be filming in Western Pennsylvania starting this summer. In addition to Dillahunt, Plimpton and Phillip Garcia, the cast of “Sprung” includes

Shakira Barrera, James Earl and Claire Gillies.

“With no place to live post-release, and a global pandemic bringing the world to a virtual standstill, Jack moves in with his former cellmate, Rooster (Phillip Garcia), Rooster’s mom, Barb (Plimpton) and Jack’s former prison girlfriend, Gloria (Barrera),” according to a plot description provided by IMDB TV.

“Bound by their marred past and unusual living circumstances, they decide to start righting some of society’s wrongs, targeting those people selfishly taking advantage of others during the pandemic.”

Movie Casting PGH has been putting out a steady stream of calls via Facebook for extras, stand- ins and photo doubles while “Sprung” is shooting here. The Amazon Prime video series “A League of Their Own” and the Dakota Johnson-starring film “Cha Cha Real Smooth” are also filming in the region. Netflix movie “Rustin” will join them later this month and is seeking local extras to recreate the 1963 March on Washington.
