Port Authority should enforce mask wearing

-

As an avid Pirates 20-game ticket holder who uses the “T” to get to and from the stadium, I am appalled by the lack of compliance regarding the mask mandate on the T. Although there are signs and announcements when entering the T, many patrons do not adhere to them and there are no consequences for their action. My family and I were discussing this on the T and a patron near us overheard us and responded (we were not talking to him) “masks don’t work.” It escalated from there to almost a fist fight. We were in the second car and the driver could not hear the conversation or see that several people were not wearing masks. Furthermore, the drivers need to drive, not police.

Earlier in the baseball season, there was a Pittsburgh policeman at the platform at the North Shore Station making sure all people entering the T were wearing masks but now it seems to be on the honor system.

If someone chooses not to wear a mask, drive! If you choose to take public transportation, follow the rules. If you don’t care about your own health, care about the people around you. Mandates don’t allow for personal choices. The airlines are vigilant in not allowing patrons on a plane without a mask and continue to enforce the mandate once someone is on board. The Port Authority needs to find a way to enforce the mask rule. I have only seen two drivers in all of these months who refused entry to those not wearing masks. I wish I had gotten their names to let their bosses know that they are to be commended. RONA STERLING
