Hampton, Franklin Regional play to draw

North Catholic shuts out Beaver, 3-0; Southmorel­and has explosion of goals

Hampton and Franklin Regional began Wednesday as two of the top girls soccer teams in Class 3A.

At the end of the day, there wasn’t any separation.

The No. 3 Talbots and No. 4 Panthers fought to a 1-1 draw in a Section 1 showdown. Franklin Regional (8-31, 7-1-1) remained at the top of the conference with the Talbots (9-2-2, 7-1-2) right behind.

More girls soccer

• North Catholic, the topranked squad in 2A, got goals from Angelina Berkey, Lauren Mealie and Lauren MacDonald in a 3-0 Section 1 victory against Beaver ( 7- 3, 5- 3). Rylie Kumar turned back six shots to earn the shutout for the Trojanette­s (10-1, 6-1).

• Southmorel­and (8-1-2, 61-1) picked up its third win in a row by routing McGuffey (47, 1-6), 6-0, in a 2A Section 3 match. Kendall and Gabby Fabery netted two goals each.

• Shady Side Academy (61-1, 6-0-1) tied Burrell, 3-3, in a key 2A Section 2 clash. The Buccaneers (8-2-3, 4-1-3) got goals from Anna Novak, Kaitlyn Postupak and Miley Kariotis.

• Marin Sleith of Yough (10-2-1, 5-1-1) stopped nine shots to earn her sixth shutout of the year in a 2-0 triumph against Waynesburg (46, 2-5). McKenzie Pritt scored both goals for the Cougars and was assisted by Nicole Veychek both times.

• Regan Reilly scored off an assist from sister Robin Reilly to lift 4A No. 4 Latrobe (10-0-1, 7-0-1) to a 1-0 victory against Fox Chapel (6-51, 4-3-1). The victory avenged the only blemish on the Wildcats’ record, a 2-2 tie against the Foxes that occurred Sept. 20.

• The stingy defense of 4A No. 2 Moon (10-1, 8-1) was in play again as the Tigers earned their eighth shutout of the year by blanking CanonMcMil­lan (7-6, 3-6), 1-0, in Section 2.

• North Allegheny, the topranked squad in 4A, set a new standard for shutouts in one season by blanking PineRichla­nd (3-7, 1-5), 3-0, in a Section 1 match. The Tigers (11-0-1, 7-0-1) have blanked 12 opponents this season, a school record.

• A hat trick from Nora Johns helped Quaker Valley (5-6-1, 4-4-0) score a 4-0 win against Hopewell (7-6-1, 1-6). The Quakers have won three of their past four games.

• Class 1A No. 2 Springdale (12-1, 8-1) scored three times in the first half and cruised to a 3-1 Section 1 triumph against Serra Catholic (6-6, 6-4).

Boys soccer

• Carlynton ( 6- 8, 3- 6) found the net in each half and downed McGuffey (7-3-1, 6-21), 2-1, in a non-conference clash.

Field hockey

• Delphine Vandael scored four times, as Hempfield downed Peters Township, 5-3.
