Former Gateway standout helps Syracuse nearly beat Florida State

The Syracuse football team lost a heartbreak­er to Florida State, 33-30, this past Saturday when Florida State made a field goal as time expired. But Gateway High School graduate Courtney Jackson had his best game as a Syracuse player. Jackson, a redshirt freshman receiver, caught six passes for 57 yards. For the season, Jackson is Syracuse’s second-leading receiver with 11 catches for 114 yards. Syracuse has a 3-2 record. The Orange play host to Pitt Nov. 27.

Edinboro’s women’s volleyball team led by junior from Neshannock

The Edinboro University women’s volleyball team is tied for first place in the PSAC West Division, and Bella Burrelli is one of the main reasons for the Scots’ success this season. Burrelli, a junior from Neshannock High School and a 6-foot outside hitter, leads the team in points with 195 and kills with 165. She had 18 kills in a 32 victory against Pitt-Johnstown this past Saturday. Edinboro is 11-1, 4-0 in the PSAC. Burrelli also plays for the Edinboro women’s basketball team.

Stony Brook struggling in football, but bright spot is Pine-Richland grad

The Stony Brook University football team has a 1-4 record, but Pine-Richland graduate Tyler King has been one of the bright spots for the Seawolves, an FCS team. King is a redshirt freshman linebacker who is second on the team in tackles with 39, including 5.5 for loss. King had 12 tackles in a game earlier this season against the University of Oregon. King originally signed with the Naval Academy and attended Navy’s prep school before deciding to go to Stony Brook.
