Quips shrug off delay, defeat Chartiers Valley

Even a lightning storm couldn’t stop Aliquippa running back Tiqwai Hayes. He brought more thunder. Hayes carried 23 times for 211 yards and two second-half touchdowns to lead Class 4A No. 3-ranked Aliquippa (5-1, 20) to a 48-13 running-clock victory over Parkway Conference rival Chartiers Valley.

The game was delayed for 90 minutes because of a storm. At the time of the suspension, the Quips had just scored on Hayes’ first touchdown of the game when he vaulted over from the 2.

At that time, the Quips had a 35-13 lead.

In the first quarter, it appeared Aliquippa would roll over Chartiers Valley after it scored two touchdowns 11 seconds apart.

Following a Chartiers Valley punt and a false start penalty, Aliquippa went for it all its first play from scrimmage and it paid off. Tajier Thornton ran the skinny post and sophomore quarterback Quentin Goode — who was 4 of 10 for 110 and two touchdowns at the time the game was suspended — hit him behind the safeties for a 51-yard touchdown strike to give the Quips a quick 7-0 lead just 2:09 into the game.

TheColts fumbled the ensuing kickoff. Thornton scooped up the loose ball in stride and Aliquippa was staked to a 14-0 advantage.

Chartiers Valley, meanwhile, could do nothing right. After stringing together a couple of first downs and seemingly settling things down, quarterback Anthony Mackey went deep himself down the left sideline, but his homerun ball was picked off by Nate Lindsey at the Aliquippa 6.

For a second it appeared Chartiers Valley would get out of it with no damage, but on third-and-6 from the 10, Hayes popped an 84-yard run to give the Quips a first down at the Colts 6.

Goode made Chartiers Valley pay three plays later when he hit Donovan Walker from 10 yards out for his second scoring pass of the game and a 20-0 lead with 2:05 left in the first quarter.

It wasn’t until Jon Tracy scored to give Aliquippa a 28-0 lead that Chartiers Valley started to climb back thanks in large to special teams.

Following the Tracy touchdown, Mackey returned the kickoff 86 yards for a score that ended the Quips shutout bid. Chartiers Valley then recovered an onside kick. Though they turned it over on downs at the Quips 11, the Colts were in perfect position when they recovered a fumble just outside the red zone.

On the first play, Mackey hit Lamont Payne for a 22yard touchdown and the Colts had cut the deficit to 28-13 with 3:00 left in the half.

After the lightning break, though, it was all Aliquippa.

The Quips came out of the locker room and stopped a Chartiers Valley drive on downs at the Quips 18. Aliquippa went to their running attack and Hayes completed the drive, his 13-yard scamper extending their advantage to 41-13.

Cameron Lindsey closed out the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown run with less than five minutes remaining that started the running clock.
