Seneca Valley outlasts Big Macs

-

From local dispatches

It took some extra time, but No. 4-ranked Seneca Valley (52, 3-1) took a big step toward securing a home playoff game by defeating No. 5 CanonMcMillan, 24-17, in double overtime Friday night in a WPIAL Class 6A Quad County contest.

In Class 6A, the top five teams from the Quad County qualify for the postseason. The top three teams get a first-round bye. The fourthplace team plays at home against the fifth-place team in the first round. The Raiders victory could prove to be crucial in getting a home playoff game.

Seneca Valley was in trouble early, trailing by 14-6 at halftime to the Big Macs.

Senior running back Nolan Dworek brought the Raiders back to life with a 30-yard fourth- quarter touchdown scamper. Seneca Valley was able to convert the 2-point conversion with Graham Hancox finding Luke Lawson in the end zone to send the game to overtime. The rivals swapped field goals in the first overtime. Dworek added his second rushing touchdown in the second overtime. Canon-McMillan (4-3, 2-2) could not match the score as junior T.J. Border intercepted the ball in the end zone.

More Class 6A Baldwin 28, Hempfield 0:

Baldwin (2-5, 2-2) was able to keep its slim playoff hopes alive with a road victory against Hempfield (2-5, 0-4).

The Fighting Highlanders went into the matchup with the worst scoring defense in Class 6A, giving up an average of 43 points per game. That changed against Hempfield as the Highlanders were able to pitch a shutout. Special teams play played a key role, as Keith Mincin returned a block punt 20 yards for the game’s opening score. John Kozar threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to push the score to 14-0 in the opening quarter.

North Allegheny 42, Norwin 24:

In a game that was delayed because of lightning, North Allegheny (4-3, 2-2) came on strong for the win. The game was deadlocked, 14-14, at one point. North Allegheny’s Logan Kushner completed 8 of 14 passes for 186 yards.

City League Westinghouse 44, Butler 34 :

Westinghouse ( 6- 0) scored one for the City League as the Bulldogs went on the road and beat Butler (3-3), a Class 6A team. The game came down to the wire. Westinghouse, ranked No. 1 in the City, led by 37-34 going into the final quarter. Quarterback Keyshawn Morsillo sealed the deal for the Bulldogs with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Malik Harris. That toss was one of Morsillo’s four scores (two passing, two running).
