Monongahela Valley Hospital has officially joined DuBois, Pa.based Penn Highlands Healthcare following regulatory reviews.

The 200-bed Mon Valley Hospital — now called Penn Highlands Mon Valley — is the seventh hospital acquired by the 10-year-old system and its first hospital in southwestern Pennsylvania. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In addition to hospitals, Penn Highlands runs a home care agency, two long-term care facilities and a senior residential living facility. Penn Highlands employs about 4,700 people at 120-plus locations in 13 counties.

Penn Highlands seems financially well positioned for the acquisition in Washington County: The system reported $689 million in operating revenue for the 12 months ending June 30 — which included $24.3 million in economic stimulus income — up 12.5% or $612 million from 2020. During the same year, the system reported $79.6 million left over after all expenses were paid, more than triple the $17.8 million in excess revenue after expenses that was reported in 2020.
