1889 The Union Trust Co. of Pittsburgh was establishe­d in the Oil Exchange Building.

1914 Medical researcher Jonas Salk, who developed the first successful polio vaccine while in Pittsburgh, was born in New York.

1931 The Edgar Thomson works in Braddock prepared to reopen; plans were announced to re-employ about 7,000 at Homestead and Braddock.

1976 Assistant District Attorney Jo Ann D’Arrigo was dismissed from the courtroom by Judge Nicholas Papadakos, who refused to hear her because she was dressed in a pantsuit.

1996 Richard Jewell, cleared of committing the Centennial Olympic Park bombing, held a news conference in Atlanta in which he thanked his mother for standing by him and lashed out at reporters and investigat­ors who had depicted him as the bomber, who turned out to be Eric Rudolph.

2020 Miles Taylor, a former chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security, revealed he was the former Trump administra­tion official who had written a scathing anti-Trump op-ed and book under the pen name “Anonymous”; the White House labeled him a “low-level, disgruntle­d former staffer.”
