Fox Chapel slips past NA in shootout

Girls soccer wins another thriller in 4A quarters

For the second time in four days, the Fox Chapel girls soccer team posted 5-4 victory in penalty kicks to record a shootout win in the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs. This time the ninthseede­d Foxes knocked off topseeded and two-time defending WPIAL champion North Allegheny at the Tigers’ Newman Stadium.

Junior goalkeeper Molly McNaughton recorded two saves in the six-player shootout, including the final one against North Allegheny’s Abigail Stager. Neither team scored in regulation or in the two overtime periods.

Scoring in the shootout for Fox Chapel were Makayla Mullhollan­d, Mia Nury, Katherine Friday, Lauren Rabbitt and Adeline Piper.

Fox Chapel will make its first semifinal appearance since 2016 Monday against Seneca Valley, at a site and time to be determined.

More Class 4A girls soccer

Seneca Valley 4, Norwin 3: Zoe Simpson scored two goals, including one in overtime, to lead the No. 5-seeded Raiders (15-3-2) their third semifinal berth in four years. Also scoring for Seneca Valley were Julia Lozowski and Liv Senff. Evelyn Moore, Paloma Swankler and Emma Rogone scored for the No. 4-seeded Knights (13-5).

Moon 1, Butler 0: The No. 2-seeded Tigers (14-1-1) scored in the 57th minute to break a scoreless tie and record their 12th shutout of the season in this home match against the No. 7-seeded Golden Tornados (13-4-2). The Tigers have allowed only two goals in 16 games.

Peters Township 2, Latrobe 0: Camryn Klein and CeCe Scott scored second-half goals to lead the No. 6-seeded Indians (11-3-3) to a road upset of the No. 3-seeded Wildcats (13-1-1), who were handed their first defeat.

Class 3A girls soccer

Plum 3, Hampton 1: Ava Weleski scored two goals and Marissa Liberto scored once as the No. 2- seeded Mustangs (18-1-1) earned a third consecutiv­e trip to the semifinals with a win over the visiting Talbots (12-4-3), who were seeded No. 7.

Montour 5, Kiski Area 0: Jessica Molitorus, Saveria Ullizzi, Francisca Diaz, Marlo Cyanovich and Elliana Dabin scored goals as the No. 5seeded Spartans (14-6) beat the No. 13-seeded Cavaliers (10-10).

Mars 6, Oakland Catholic 0: Piper Coffield scored four goals and assisted on another as the top-seeded Planets (14-0-1) earned a fifth consecutiv­e trip to the semifinals with this win over the visiting Eagles (13-4-1), who were seeded No. 9. Addi Girdwood and Rosie Pellegrino also scored for Mars.

Class 2A boys soccer

Charleroi 2, Elizabeth Forward 1: Joel Chambers scored on a feed from Eben McIntyre with 7:21 left in overtime as the No. 4-seeded Cougars (132- 1) defeated the No. 5seeded Warriors ( 12-5) at Charleroi. The Cougars broke a scoreless tie in the 63rd minute when Denver Radomile scored on a header on a corner kick from Joel Chambers.

Quaker Valley 14, East Allegheny 0: Keller Chamovitz scored five goals and assisted on one, while Rowan Kriebel scored four goals and assisted on another, as the No. 2-seeded Quakers (17-2) pounded the visiting Wildcats (11-6), who were seeded No. 10.

Ambridge 2, Shady Side Academy 1: Will Gruca scored in overtime to lead the No. 6-seeded Bridgers (12-5) to a road upset of the No. 3seeded Bulldogs (11-3). Anthony Powell scored the other Bridgers goal.

Class 4A volleyball

North Allegheny 3, Seneca Valley 0: The top- ranked Tigers (14-1) advanced to the semifinals for the 15th time in 16 years with a 25-13, 2514, 25-20 sweep of the No. 8-seeded Raiders (11-7). Mia Tuman had 28 assists, while Jadyn Perkins and Ella Deeter had 11 kills, for the Tigers.

Moon 3, Pine-Richland 2: The No. 4-seeded Tigers (14-2) avenged a regular-season loss with this five-set victory over the No. 5-seeded Rams (11-6). It earned the Tigers a third consecutiv­e semifinal berth.

Class 1A volleyball

Leechburg 3, Union 1:

Kalli Grine recorded 15 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks as No. 4-seeded Leechburg (13-1) earned its first semifinal berth with a 25-11, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22 win over No. 5 Union ( 16- 2) in a match played at North Allegheny. Elise Booker had 14 kills and 33 digs for Union.

California 3, Mapletown 1:

The No. 7-seeded Trojans (12-6) avenged two previous section losses in this 20-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 upset of the No. 2-seeded Maples (162). Macee Cree had 20 assists and 25 digs for the Maples.
