Business owner’s gesture makes veteran’s day

My father was a veteran of World War II, and I am a Vietnam veteran. When my dad died, I was blessed to get the flag that draped his coffin.

I proudly fly that flag every day except in inclement weather. It stands for not only the freedom that Dad and I fought for but also for all the other veterans who fought to keepour country free.

A little over a month ago, I noticed the flag was getting dirty from flying it so much. I was going to wash it but decided to call the flag manufacturer. When I called Valley Forge Flag, they told me to get it dry cleaned because it was made of cotton bunting.

I decided to take it to Sam’s Dry Cleaners on Cochran Road in Mt. Lebanon, which I have dealt with in the past. When I took the flag to Sam’s, I spoke to the owner, Angela Verbene, to see if they could clean it for me. I explained to her that this flag was very important to me because it draped my WWII veteran dad’s coffin. She told me they had done veterans’ flags before and assured me that she would make the flag as clean as the day it was new.

Three days later, I went to pick it up. Wow, it was just as beautiful as the day that the solders gave it to me at Dad’s burial. When I asked Angela what I owed her for the great job, she said, “Nothing.” She was proud to do this for a veteran. With tears in my eyes, I thanked her for her kindness and gave her a big hug.

It is so great to see people like Angela and her husband, Sam, who appreciate what we veterans have done for the freedom of this country. I will continue to deal with Sam’s Dry Cleaners and suggest all of you to deal with this wonderful couple who honor veterans.

New acquaintance a thoughtful benefactor

As we parked our car at Brother Andre’s Cafe, we were greeted by a very pleasant young lady who had just crossed the boulevard from Starbuck’s, which was closed.

Imagine our surprise when we went to pay for our delicious coffee and bagels and were told that Kim, our new acquaintance, had paid our bill.

Kim, we hope you read this to know we are grateful for your thoughtfulness.

Heart to heart! Sister Betty and Carroll.
